Mughal dynasty, Mughal also spelled Mughal, Persian Mughal (“Mongol”), Muslim dynasty of Turko-Mongol origin, which ruled most of northern India from the mid-16th to the 18th century. After that time it existed as a much reduced and increasingly powerless entity until the middle of the 19th century.
