Short Answer Questions — 2/3 Marks

1. What is meant by Grammar in Context?

Answer: Grammar in Context means teaching grammatical forms through meaningful sentences, stories, conversations and real-life situations instead of teaching isolated rules only. It helps learners understand both the form and the use of grammar.

2. Why is contextual grammar important?

Answer: Contextual grammar is important because it helps learners understand how grammar works in real communication. It makes grammar meaningful, improves retention and helps learners use correct forms while speaking and writing.

3. What is the difference between grammar in isolation and grammar in context?

Answer: Grammar in isolation focuses mainly on rules and separate examples. Grammar in context teaches grammar through meaningful texts, situations and communication. The latter helps learners understand both meaning and use.

4. Mention the main parts of speech.

Answer: The main parts of speech are noun, pronoun, verb, adjective, adverb, preposition, conjunction and interjection.

5. What is subject–verb agreement? Give an example.

Answer: Subject–verb agreement means the verb should match the subject in number and person.

Example: She goes to school every day. Here, the singular subject “She” takes the singular verb “goes.”

6. What are the three main tenses in English?

Answer: The three main tenses are:

Long Answer Questions — 4/5 Marks'

1. What is Grammar in Context? Discuss its importance.

Answer: Grammar in Context refers to teaching and learning grammatical forms through meaningful language use rather than through isolated rules alone.

In contextual grammar, learners encounter grammar through stories, conversations, notices, letters, classroom interaction and other real-life texts.

Its importance includes:

It makes grammar meaningful.

Learners understand how structures are actually used.

It improves speaking and writing.

It helps learners remember grammatical forms better.

It reduces mechanical rule memorisation.

It connects grammar with communication.

It helps learners notice patterns from examples.

It encourages active participation.

Therefore, grammar should not be treated as a separate body of rules only; it should be linked with actual language use.

2. Explain the difference between traditional grammar teaching and contextual grammar teaching.

Answer: Traditional grammar teaching often begins with a rule, followed by examples and exercises. Learners may memorise rules without understanding how to use them in communication.

Contextual grammar teaching begins with meaningful language. Learners first see or hear a structure in a real situation and then notice how it works.

Traditional Grammar

Grammar in Context

Rule-first approach

Meaning/use-first approach

Isolated sentences

Meaningful text and situations

More memorisation

More understanding and use

Often teacher-centred

More learner participation

Accuracy-focused

Accuracy plus communication

Contextual grammar is generally more useful for developing communicative competence.

3. Discuss the role of parts of speech in sentence construction.

Answer: Parts of speech are the basic grammatical categories used to build sentences.

Noun: names a person, place, thing or idea. Example: Rita is a teacher.

Pronoun: replaces a noun. Example: She is kind.

Verb: expresses action or state. Example: She teaches English.

Adjective: describes a noun. Example: She is a good teacher.

Adverb: modifies a verb, adjective or another adverb. Example: She speaks clearly.

Preposition: shows relationship. Example: The book is on the table.

Conjunction: joins words or clauses. Example: Rita and Mina are friends.

A proper understanding of these categories helps learners construct clear and correct sentences.

4. Explain tense and its importance in communication.

Answer: Tense indicates the time of an action or situation.

The three main tense divisions are:

Present: Used for present actions, habits, facts or states. Example: I read every day.

Past: Used for actions or events that happened in the past. Example: I read the book yesterday.

Future: Used for future actions or plans. Example: I will read the book tomorrow.

Correct tense helps the listener or reader understand when an action takes place. Wrong tense can create confusion. Therefore, tense should be taught through real situations, timelines, stories and conversations.

5. What is subject–verb agreement? Explain with examples.

Answer: Subject–verb agreement means that the verb must agree with the subject in number and person.

Examples:

He plays football.

They play football.

The boy is happy.

The boys are happy.

Important points:

Singular subjects generally take singular verbs.

Plural subjects generally take plural verbs.

“I” and “you” have special verb patterns.

The teacher should teach agreement through meaningful sentences rather than rules alone.

Subject–verb agreement is essential for grammatical accuracy in speaking and writing.

6. Explain the use of articles with examples.

Answer: English has three articles: a, an and the.

A is used before a singular countable noun beginning with a consonant sound. Example: a boy, a book

An is used before a singular countable noun beginning with a vowel sound. Example: an apple, an hour

The is used when the noun is specific or already known. Example: The book on the table is mine.

Articles should be taught through meaningful situations because their use depends heavily on context.

7. How can grammar be taught through meaningful activities?

Answer: Grammar can be taught more effectively through activities that require learners to use language for a purpose.

Useful activities include:

Story completion

Dialogue writing

Role-play

Picture description

Sentence reconstruction

Information-gap activities

Editing short texts

Guided conversation

Notice or message writing

Pair and group work

For example, past tense can be practised by asking learners to describe what they did yesterday. This gives the grammatical form a real communicative purpose.

8. Discuss the inductive and deductive approaches to teaching grammar.

Answer: There are two common approaches to grammar teaching.

Deductive Approach: The teacher explains the rule first and then gives examples.

Example: Teacher explains the rule for using “a” and “an,” then learners complete exercises.

Inductive Approach: Learners first observe examples and then discover the rule.

Example:

an apple

an orange

a mango

a book

Learners observe the examples and identify the pattern.

The inductive approach encourages observation and discovery, while the deductive approach may be useful when a quick and clear explanation is required. A teacher can use both depending on learners and context.

9. Explain the role of errors in grammar learning.

Answer: Errors are a natural part of language development. They often show that the learner is trying to apply a rule.

For example, a learner may say:

He go to school.

This shows that the learner understands the main sentence pattern but has not yet mastered subject–verb agreement.

Teachers should:

Identify recurring errors.

Understand why they occur.

Give appropriate feedback.

Allow self-correction.

Avoid humiliating learners.

Provide meaningful practice.

Thus, errors can be used as useful evidence for planning further teaching.

10. Discuss the role of the teacher in teaching grammar in context.

Answer: The teacher plays the role of facilitator rather than only a rule-giver.

The teacher should:

Present grammar through meaningful texts.

Connect grammar with real communication.

Encourage learners to notice patterns.

Use stories, dialogues and classroom situations.

Provide opportunities for speaking and writing.

Use both inductive and deductive approaches when appropriate.

Give constructive feedback.

Treat errors as learning opportunities.

Avoid excessive rule memorisation.

Help learners transfer grammar into actual language use.

The aim is to help learners become both accurate and effective users of English.

11. How can a teacher teach grammar through a text?

Answer: A teacher can use a short story, dialogue, paragraph or notice as the starting point.

The steps may be:

Select a meaningful text.

Let learners read or listen to it.

Discuss its meaning first.

Draw attention to a recurring grammatical pattern.

Ask learners to identify similar examples.

Help them infer or understand the rule.

Provide controlled practice.

Move to meaningful speaking or writing tasks.

For example, a story about “Yesterday” can naturally be used to teach past tense forms.

12. Why should grammar be linked with listening, speaking, reading and writing?

Answer: Grammar is not a separate language skill. It supports all four language skills.

Listening: Grammar helps learners understand relationships between words and ideas.

Speaking: It helps learners form meaningful and accurate sentences.

Reading: Grammar helps readers understand sentence structure and meaning.

Writing: It helps writers organize ideas clearly and accurately.

Therefore, grammar teaching should be integrated with actual listening, speaking, reading and writing activities instead of being taught only through isolated exercises.

13. What are the characteristics of a good grammar classroom?

Answer: A good grammar classroom should be:

Meaningful rather than purely rule-based.

Learner-centred.

Connected with real-life communication.

Rich in examples and texts.

Interactive and activity-based.

Supportive of learner errors.

Balanced between accuracy and fluency.

Integrated with the four language skills.

Based on understanding rather than memorisation.

Focused on helping learners use grammar independently.

14. Explain punctuation and its importance in written English.

Answer: Punctuation refers to the use of marks that organize written language and make meaning clear.

Common punctuation marks include:

Full stop (.)

Comma (,)

Question mark (?)

Exclamation mark (!)

Apostrophe (')

Quotation marks (“ ”)

Punctuation is important because it:

Separates ideas.

Shows where a sentence ends.

Indicates questions and exclamations.

Makes meaning clearer.

Prevents misunderstanding.

Makes writing easier to read.
