Short Answer Questions — 2/3 Marks

1. Mention any four major issues in teaching English at the elementary level.

Answer:

Limited exposure to English

Large and mixed-ability classes

Excessive focus on grammar and memorisation

Lack of confidence in speaking English

Other issues may include shortage of suitable TLM, multilingual classrooms and uneven teacher proficiency.

2. Why is limited exposure to English a problem?

Answer: If learners hear and use English only for a short classroom period, they get fewer opportunities to develop listening, pronunciation, vocabulary and fluency. Language learning requires regular meaningful exposure.

3. How does multilingualism affect English teaching?

Answer: Multilingualism may create differences in learners’ vocabulary, pronunciation and classroom participation. At the same time, learners’ home languages can be used as valuable resources for comparison, meaning-making and explanation.

4. Why is rote learning not enough for learning English?

Answer: English is a language for communication. Memorising grammar rules or textbook answers does not automatically develop the ability to understand, speak, read or write in real situations.

5. What problems are caused by large classes?

Answer: In large classes, it becomes difficult to provide individual attention, assess speaking, organise meaningful interaction and support learners at different levels.

6. Why should grammar be taught in context?

Answer: Contextual grammar helps learners understand how grammatical forms are used in real communication. It is more meaningful than teaching isolated rules only.

7. How can a teacher reduce fear of speaking English?

Answer: The teacher should create a supportive classroom, allow pair and group work, accept reasonable mistakes and provide encouraging feedback instead of embarrassing learners.

8. Why are learners’ errors important?

Answer: Errors show how learners are thinking about the language. They help teachers identify learning needs and plan suitable support.

9. What is the importance of oral language at the elementary level?

Answer: Oral language provides a foundation for vocabulary, pronunciation, comprehension and later reading and writing. Children need opportunities to listen and speak regularly.

10. How can the home language support English learning?

Answer: The home language can help explain difficult ideas, compare meanings, connect prior knowledge and reduce unnecessary confusion, especially in the early stages.

Long Answer Questions — 4/5 Marks

1. Discuss the major issues of teaching English at the elementary level.

Answer: Teaching English at the elementary level involves several challenges because learners differ in linguistic background, exposure, confidence and learning opportunities.

Major issues include:

1. Limited exposure: Many learners use English only during the English period.

2. Multilingual classrooms: Children may come from different home-language backgrounds.

3. Rote learning: Teaching may focus too much on memorising answers and grammar rules.

4. Lack of oral practice: Learners may read and write without enough listening and speaking opportunities.

5. Large classes: It becomes difficult to provide individual attention and regular feedback.

6. Mixed ability: Some learners may read confidently while others struggle with basic vocabulary or decoding.

7. Fear of mistakes: Excessive correction or ridicule may reduce participation.

8. Inadequate TLM: Lack of stories, pictures, audio and other resources may make language teaching mechanical.

9. Assessment problems: Written tests may dominate, while speaking and listening remain under-assessed.

10. Teacher proficiency and pedagogy: Effective English teaching requires both language proficiency and suitable teaching methods.

A good English classroom should therefore be communicative, inclusive, activity-based and sensitive to learners’ linguistic backgrounds.

2. Explain the role of multilingualism in teaching English.

Answer: Multilingualism is common in Indian classrooms. Learners may speak one language at home, another in the community and learn English at school.

Multilingualism should not be viewed only as a difficulty. It can be a resource.

The teacher can:

Connect new English words with familiar concepts.

Allow discussion in familiar languages when appropriate.

Compare sentence patterns and meanings.

Encourage learners to share words and expressions from different languages.

Use bilingual support in the early stages.

Gradually increase meaningful use of English.

The aim is not to replace the child’s home language, but to build English on the language knowledge the child already possesses.

3. Why should English teaching move from rote learning to meaningful communication?

Answer: Language is learned effectively through meaningful use. If learners only memorise answers, rules and word lists, they may perform in examinations but still struggle to communicate.

Meaningful communication helps learners:

Understand language in context.

Develop fluency.

Build functional vocabulary.

Use grammar naturally.

Improve confidence.

Learn to listen and respond.

Connect language with real life.

Activities such as role-play, conversation, storytelling, pair work and picture description make English more functional and meaningful.

4. Discuss the problem of large and mixed-ability classes in English teaching.

Answer: Large and mixed-ability classrooms contain learners with different levels of exposure, confidence and language ability.

Problems include:

Limited individual attention.

Difficulty assessing speaking and listening.

Unequal participation.

Advanced learners may finish early.

Struggling learners may feel left behind.

Possible strategies include:

Pair and group work

Peer support

Graded tasks

Flexible grouping

Visual and oral support

Additional practice for learners who need it

Enrichment tasks for advanced learners

The teacher should avoid comparing learners negatively and should provide multiple ways to participate.

5. Explain the importance of a language-rich environment.

Answer: A language-rich environment gives learners frequent and meaningful opportunities to experience English.

It may include:

Classroom labels

Word walls

Stories and picture books

Poems and rhymes

Classroom conversation

Posters and charts

Read-aloud activities

Learners’ own writing displayed in class

Such an environment increases exposure, vocabulary and confidence. English becomes part of everyday classroom interaction rather than only a textbook subject.

6. Discuss the role of listening and speaking in elementary English teaching.

Answer: Listening and speaking form an important foundation for language development.

Through listening, learners:

understand pronunciation and rhythm,

learn new vocabulary,

understand sentence patterns.

Through speaking, learners:

express ideas,

practise vocabulary and grammar,

gain confidence,

develop communicative competence.

Useful activities include stories, rhymes, conversations, role-play, picture talk and oral games.

Listening and speaking should therefore be integrated with reading and writing rather than neglected.

7. How should teachers deal with learners’ errors in English?

Answer: Errors are a natural part of language learning. They often show that learners are experimenting with language rules.

Teachers should:

Distinguish between minor and serious errors.

Avoid correcting every error immediately.

Correct errors that interfere with meaning when necessary.

Encourage self-correction.

Use peer correction carefully.

Give constructive feedback.

Note recurring errors for future teaching.

For example, during a speaking activity, fluency may be more important than stopping the learner after every grammatical mistake.

8. Discuss the importance of teaching grammar in context.

Answer: Grammar in context means teaching grammatical forms through meaningful language instead of isolated rules.

For example, past tense can be taught through a story about “Yesterday” rather than only through a table of verb forms.

Advantages include:

Learners understand meaning and use together.

Grammar becomes easier to remember.

Learners apply grammar in communication.

It connects grammar with reading and writing.

It reduces mechanical memorisation.

Grammar should therefore support communication, not become the only focus of English teaching.

9. Explain the role of Teaching-Learning Materials in English teaching.

Answer: Teaching-Learning Materials make English understandable and interesting.

Useful TLM includes:

pictures,

flashcards,

real objects,

storybooks,

charts,

audio,

short videos,

puppets.

TLM helps:

explain meaning without lengthy translation,

develop vocabulary,

create contexts for speaking,

support listening comprehension,

engage young learners.

Low-cost and locally available materials can also be used effectively.

10. How can a teacher make English teaching learner-centred?

Answer: A learner-centred English classroom gives learners opportunities to use the language actively.

The teacher should:

reduce excessive teacher talk,

organise pair and group work,

encourage questions,

use meaningful tasks,

connect lessons with learners’ experiences,

allow creative responses,

use stories and games,

accept different learning speeds,

give constructive feedback,

act as a facilitator rather than only a lecturer.

11. Discuss the issue of English language anxiety.

Answer: English language anxiety refers to fear or nervousness while using English, especially speaking in front of others.

Possible causes include:

fear of making mistakes,

ridicule by peers,

constant correction,

difficult tasks,

low confidence,

comparison with fluent learners.

Teachers can reduce anxiety by:

creating a respectful classroom,

using pair work before whole-class speaking,

praising effort,

allowing preparation time,

treating errors as natural,

giving manageable tasks.

12. Explain the importance of inclusive English teaching.

Answer: Inclusive English teaching ensures that learners with different abilities, linguistic backgrounds and learning needs can participate meaningfully.

The teacher may:

use visual and oral support,

repeat or simplify instructions when needed,

use flexible grouping,

provide different levels of tasks,

allow multiple forms of response,

use familiar contexts,

support learners without labelling them.

Inclusive pedagogy values diversity and aims to provide meaningful learning opportunities for all learners.

13. What problems arise when English teaching is textbook-centred?

Answer: Textbook-centred teaching may create problems when the book becomes the only source of language learning.

Possible problems include:

excessive reading and explanation by the teacher,

memorisation of textbook answers,

little oral communication,

limited creativity,

little connection with real life,

learners becoming passive.

The textbook should be used as a resource, while the teacher adds discussion, role-play, stories, local examples and language activities.

14. Discuss the role of the teacher in addressing the issues of English teaching.

Answer: The teacher plays a central role in overcoming difficulties in elementary English teaching.

The teacher should:

create a supportive and language-rich classroom.

respect learners’ home languages.

provide regular listening and speaking opportunities.

use child-friendly materials.

reduce rote learning.

teach grammar and vocabulary in context.

use pair and group work.

identify individual learning needs.

give constructive feedback.

assess all four language skills.

encourage confidence and curiosity.

connect English with real-life communication.

15. Suggest measures for improving English teaching at the elementary level.

Answer: English teaching can be improved through the following measures:

Increase meaningful exposure to English.
