1. What are the main features of the mechanical teachers and the schoolrooms that Margie and Tommy have in the story?
Answer: Margie and Tommy had mechanical teachers instead of human teachers. These were computerised machines with large screens on which lessons appeared. They taught different subjects, asked questions, gave tests and checked homework. Each mechanical teacher could be adjusted according to the age and ability of the individual child.
The schoolrooms were located inside their own homes. Margie’s schoolroom was next to her bedroom. She studied there alone and had no classmates. Her mechanical teacher worked according to a fixed schedule and had a slot where she submitted her homework and test papers.
Although this system provided personalised lessons, it lacked human interaction. There were no classmates to study or play with and no human teacher to communicate with personally.
2. Why did Margie hate school? Why did she think the old kind of school must have been fun?
Answer: Margie hated school because she had to study alone with a mechanical teacher. The machine gave her repeated tests, especially in geography, and she had been performing badly. She had no classmates with whom she could talk, play or share her school experiences.
When Tommy told her about old schools, Margie became fascinated. In those schools, children went to a common building, studied together and were taught by human teachers. Children of the same age learned the same things and could help one another with their homework.
Margie imagined that studying and playing with other children must have been enjoyable. Therefore, she felt that the old kind of school must have been much more fun than her lonely mechanical school.
3. Do you agree with Margie that school today are more fun than the school in the story? Give reasons for your answer.
Answer: Yes, I agree with Margie that present-day schools are more enjoyable than the school described in the story. In ordinary schools, students learn together and can interact with their teachers and classmates. They can ask questions, discuss lessons, play games and participate in different activities.
Human teachers can understand the feelings and difficulties of students and explain a lesson in different ways when necessary. Students also learn cooperation, friendship, discipline, kindness and respect by spending time with others.
In the story, Margie studies alone with a mechanical teacher. Although the machine can provide personalised lessons, it cannot provide friendship or human warmth. Therefore, present-day schools offer a more social, lively and enjoyable learning experience.

The teacher is always present in their house and they can study as per their timings.
The teacher sometimes goes wrong as well. There can be some virus Playing havoc with its programming. This may lead to inaccessibility of certain subjects. Sometimes this can lead the teacher to throw really difficult test, which may not be fit for a particular child. Otherwise the teacher is always programmed to suit each individual students learning need and capability.

Moreover children Develop a fair understanding about each other and of their surrounding when they go to a school and interact with each other. It is a healthier way of learning. listening to teachers explanation of lesson is always more interesting than reading the entire lesson on a mechanical computer.
