The Snake and the Mirror
Thinking about the Text
I. Discuss in Pairs and answer each question below in a short paragraph (30-40 words).
1.’’The sound was a familiar one. ’’What sound did the doctor hear? What did he think it was? How many times did he hear it? (Find the places in the text.) When and why did the sounds stop?
Answer: The doctor heard a familiar noise from above and thought that it was made by the rats moving on the beam. He heard the sound three times. It stopped when the snake fell from the roof onto him.
2. What two “important” & “earth-shaking” decisions did the doctor take while he was looking into the mirror?
Answer: While looking into the mirror, the doctor made two “important” decisions. He decided to shave daily and grow a thin moustache to look more handsome. He also decided to keep an attractive smile on his face.
3. “I looked into the mirror and smiled, “says the doctor. A little later he says, “I forgot my danger and smiled feebly at myself, “what is the doctor opinion about himself when: (i) he first smiles & (ii) he smiles again? In what way do his thoughts change in between and why?
Answer: When the doctor first smiles, he admires himself and feels proud of being a handsome young bachelor and doctor.
Later, when the snake coils around his arm, he smiles feebly at his own foolishness and helplessness. His pride disappears because he suddenly realises how powerless he is in the face of danger.
II. This story is about a frightening incident narrated in a humorous way. What makes it humorous? (Think of the contrasts it presents between dreams and reality. Some of them are between)
1. (i) The kind of person the doctor is (money, possessions)
Answer: The doctor is poor and has very few possessions. He lives in a small rented room without electricity. He has only about sixty rupees, a few shirts and dhotis, and one black coat. His poverty contrasts humorously with his ambitious dreams.
(ii) The kind of person he wants to be (appearance, ambition)
Answer: The doctor wants to look handsome, smart and attractive. He decides to shave daily, grow a thin moustache and always keep a pleasant smile on his face. He also dreams of becoming a successful and wealthy doctor.
2.(i) The person he wants to marry
Answer: The doctor wants to marry a wealthy woman doctor with a good medical practice. He also wants her to be fat so that, if he ever makes a mistake, she will not be able to run fast enough to catch him.
(ii) The person he actually marries
Answer: In reality, the doctor marries a thin and slender woman who can run very fast. She has the qualities of a sprinter, which is exactly the opposite of the kind of wife he had imagined marrying.
3. (i) His thoughts when he looks into the mirror
Answer: While looking into the mirror, the doctor is full of self-admiration. He thinks about improving his appearance by shaving daily, growing a thin moustache and keeping an attractive smile. He feels proud of his looks and profession.
(ii) His thoughts when the snake is crawled around his arm.
Answer: When the snake coils around his arm above the elbow, the doctor becomes completely still with fear. He holds his breath and realises that he is helpless. His earlier pride disappears, and he thinks of himself as a poor and foolish man.

Answer: The doctor heard of a familiar sound which he thought to be of rats. His room is full of rats and there was a regular traffic of rats to & from the beam. He heard the sound thrice. The sound stopped suddenly after the doctor heard a dull thud as if a rubber tube had fallen to the ground. It was a snake.

Answer: (i) When the doctor first smiles, he admires his good looks and profession.

Answer:- When the snake crawled around his arm above the elbow, he kept sitting there holding his breath. He nationless and was afraid of the snake.
