Answer: There are four characters in the narrative—Jerome, the narrator, George, Harris and Montmorency, the dog. All four contribute to the humorous confusion and disorder that take place during the packing.

Answer: Jerome volunteered to do the packing because he considered himself an expert at it. He was proud of his packing ability and wanted George and Harris to see how skilfully he could do the job.

Answer: George and Harris readily accepted Jerome’s offer and relaxed instead of helping him. George sat in an easy chair while Harris rested comfortably. Jerome was annoyed because he had expected them to work under his direction.

Answer: Jerome says that Montmorency’s ambition in life was to get in the way, create confusion and be sworn at.
Montmorency is a mischievous and troublesome dog. He interferes with the packing, sits on things, puts his leg into the jam and attacks the lemons. However, his mischief makes the story much more lively and humorous.

1. Of the three, Jerome, George, and Harris, who do you think is the best or worst packer? Support your answer with details from the text.
Answer: Jerome appears to be a better packer than George and Harris, although he is far from perfect. He begins confidently and tries to pack the bag properly, but his forgetfulness causes several problems. He forgets the boots, worries about his toothbrush and has to reopen the bag again.
George and Harris, however, create even greater confusion. They begin by breaking a cup, squash a tomato, step on the butter and repeatedly lose things that are close to them. Their packing becomes increasingly disorganised.
Therefore, Jerome seems comparatively better, while George and Harris appear to be the more careless packers. Their repeated mistakes and clumsy behaviour provide much of the humour in the story.
2. How did Montmorency contribute to the packing?
Answer: Montmorency did not really help with the packing. Instead, he made the work more difficult and confusing. He had a habit of getting in everybody’s way and interfering whenever people were busy.
During the packing, he sat on things that were about to be packed, put his leg into the jam and disturbed the teaspoons. He also treated the lemons as if they were rats and attacked them.
His behaviour irritated George and Harris and added further disorder to an already chaotic situation. However, Montmorency’s mischief is one of the main sources of humour in the story and makes the packing episode more entertaining.
3. Do you find this story funny? What are the humorous elements in it? (Pick out at least three, think about what happens, as well as how it is described.)
Answer: Yes, the story is very funny because ordinary packing turns into a series of ridiculous mistakes. One humorous incident occurs when Jerome searches everywhere for his toothbrush and finally finds it inside a boot.
Another funny situation occurs when George and Harris begin packing the hampers. They break a cup, squash a tomato and step on the butter. Their efforts to manage the butter create even more confusion.
Montmorency adds further humour by interfering with everything. He sits on objects, gets into the jam and attacks the lemons as though they were rats. Jerome’s witty and exaggerated description of all these incidents makes the story especially amusing.
