 Lesson-8 (Poem)

On Killing a Tree

Summary

The poem “On Killing a Tree” describes how difficult it is to completely destroy a tree. A tree cannot be killed by a simple cut of a knife because it has grown slowly over many years by drawing nourishment from the earth and absorbing sunlight, air and water. Even if its bark is cut and the trunk is wounded, the tree can heal itself and produce new branches and leaves.

To kill the tree completely, it has to be uprooted from the earth. Its roots, which are hidden deep inside the soil, are the source of its strength and life. Once the roots are pulled out and exposed to sunlight and air, they begin to dry. Gradually, the tree withers, browns, hardens and twists. Only then is the tree finally killed.

The poem highlights both the great strength and regenerative power of nature and the harsh effort required to destroy it.

Question Answers
1. Can a “simple jab of the knife” kill a tree? Why not?

Answer: No, a simple jab of the knife cannot kill a tree. A tree has grown slowly over many years and its roots are firmly fixed deep inside the earth. Even if its trunk is cut, the wound can heal and new branches can grow again. Therefore, a mere cut is not enough to destroy it completely.

2. How has the tree grown to its full size? List the words suggestive of its life and activity.

Answer: The tree has grown to its full size slowly over many years by drawing nourishment from the earth and absorbing sunlight, air and water.

The words and phrases suggesting its life and activity are:

  • “grown slowly”
  • “consuming the earth”
  • “feeding upon its crust”
  • “absorbing years of sunlight, air, water”
  • “sprouting leaves”
  • “rising out”

These expressions show that the tree is a living and growing organism.

3. What is the meaning of “bleeding bark”? What makes it bleed?

Answer: “Bleeding bark” refers to the sap that comes out of the tree when its bark or trunk is cut. The sap looks like blood flowing from a wound. The tree begins to “bleed” when it is hacked or chopped with a knife or an axe.

4. The poet says “No” at the beginning of the third stanza. What does he mean by this?

Answer: By saying “No,” the poet emphasizes that simply hacking and chopping the tree is not enough to kill it. The tree can recover from such wounds and produce new shoots. To destroy it completely, its roots must be pulled out of the earth.

5. What is the meaning of “anchoring earth” and “earth-cave”?

Answer: “Anchoring earth” refers to the soil that holds the tree firmly through its roots and gives it support and stability.

“Earth-cave” refers to the deep, hidden space inside the soil where the roots of the tree remain buried.

6. What does the poet mean by “the strength of the tree exposed”?

Answer: The roots are the real source of the tree’s strength and life. When the tree is uprooted, these roots are pulled out of the earth and exposed to sunlight and air. Once exposed, they lose their protection and gradually dry up, causing the tree to die.

7. What finally kills the tree?

Answer: The tree is finally killed when it is completely uprooted from the earth. Its roots are then exposed to sunlight and air. They gradually wither, dry, brown, harden and twist. This complete drying of the roots and the tree finally causes its death.
