1. How does Toto come to grandfather’s private zoo?
Ans: Grandfather purchased Toto from a tonga-driver for five rupees. The monkey was tied to a feeding trough, which seemed unsuitable. Feeling pity for it, grandfather decided to bring Toto home and include it in his private zoo.
2. “Toto was a pretty monkey.” In what sense is Toto pretty?
Ans: Toto is considered pretty because of his attractive features. He has bright, lively eyes with a mischievous sparkle, a charming smile showing white teeth, and nimble fingers. His long tail acts like a third hand, adding to his uniqueness.
3. Why does grandfather take Toto to Saharanpur and how? Why does the ticket collector insist on calling Toto a dog?
Ans: Grandfather takes Toto to Saharanpur because the monkey disturbs other animals and cannot stay peacefully at home. He carries Toto in a strong canvas bag with straw inside so it cannot escape. At the station, when Toto peeks out, the ticket collector is surprised and calls it a dog, charging a fare for it. Despite grandfather’s explanation, the collector refuses to change his decision and insists on treating Toto as a dog.
4. How does Toto take a bath? Where has he learnt to do this? How does Toto almost boil himself alive?
Ans: Toto bathes in warm water, first testing the temperature, then stepping in gradually and even using soap. He learns this by observing humans. Once, he sits inside a kettle of warm water and keeps adjusting himself as the water heats up, not realizing the danger, and nearly ends up boiling himself.
5. Why does the author say, “Toto was not the sort of pet we could keep for long”?
Ans: Toto proves to be very troublesome. He damages household items like dishes, clothes, and curtains, and creates constant disturbance. As the family cannot afford such losses, they decide to sell him back to the tonga-driver for three rupees.
