1 October International Senior Citizen’s Day

Since 1991, October 1 has been celebrated every year as International Senior Citizens’ Day. On December 14, 1990, the United Nations General Assembly decided to celebrate the day through a resolution no. 45/106. The main purpose of celebrating this day is to create awareness about the family and social issues faced by the elderly citizens and to create a healthy environment for them. One of the objectives of this day is to recognize the contribution of senior citizens to the society. However, national grandparents’ day in America and Canada and ‘Day of Respect to the Elderly’ have been observed in Japan for almost the same purpose.
