Lesson-1 (Part 1)

THE ROAD NOT TAKEN

Summary of each stanza
1st Stanza

Answer: In the first stanza, the poet comes to a place in a yellow wood where the road divides into two different paths. Since he cannot travel both, he stands there for a long time trying to decide which one to choose. He looks carefully down one road as far as possible until it bends and disappears among the bushes. The situation represents an important moment of choice in life.

2nd Stanza

Answer: In the second stanza, the poet chooses the other road because at first it appears grassy and slightly less worn. However, after observing the two roads carefully, he realises that both have actually been travelled almost equally. This shows that the difference between the two choices is not as great as it first appears.

Stanza 3

Answer: In the third stanza, the poet notices that both roads are covered with fresh leaves that no traveller has stepped on that morning. He keeps the first road for another day, but he knows that one path usually leads to another. Therefore, he doubts whether he will ever get the opportunity to return and take the road he has left behind.

Stanza 4

Answer: In the final stanza, the poet imagines himself looking back on this decision many years later. He thinks that he will remember choosing one road instead of the other and will say that the choice made a great difference in his life. The stanza expresses reflection on how the choices we make shape the direction of our lives.

Thinking about the poem
I. 1. Where does the traveler find himself? What problem does he face?

Answer: The traveler finds himself in a yellow wood at a point where two roads diverge. His problem is that he cannot travel on both roads and must choose only one, without knowing where either path will ultimately lead.

2. Discuss what these phrases mean to you.
(i) a yellow wood

Answer: “A yellow wood” refers to a forest in autumn when the leaves have turned yellow. It also suggests a time of change, just as the traveler is facing an important choice in his life.

(ii) it was grassy and wanted wear

Answer: This means that the road appeared to have more grass and seemed to have been used less. At first, it looked as though it needed more travellers to walk over it.

(iii) the passing there

Answer: “The passing there” refers to people travelling along that road. It suggests the footsteps and movement of travellers who have used the path.

(iv) leaves no step had trodden black

Answer: This means that the fallen leaves on both roads were still fresh and had not yet been crushed or darkened by people walking over them that morning.

(v) how way leads on to way

Answer: It means that one path leads to another, just as one decision in life leads to further choices and new situations. Once we move forward, returning to an earlier choice may become difficult or impossible.

3. Is there any difference between the two roads as the poet describe them.
(i) in stanzas two and three?

Answer: At first, the second road appears grassy and seems to have been used less. However, the poet soon admits that both roads had actually been worn almost equally. In the third stanza, both are covered with fresh leaves. Therefore, there is no significant difference between them.

(ii) in the last two lines of the poem?

Answer: In the last two lines, the poet imagines himself looking back and describing the road he chose as the one less travelled. This contrasts with his earlier observation that the two roads were actually almost the same.

4. What do you think the last two lines of the poem mean? ( looking back, does the poet regret his choice or accept it? )

Answer: The last two lines show the importance that people often give to past choices when they look back on their lives. The poet imagines that his decision will have made a major difference to his future.

His feelings are not simply regretful. The word “sigh” suggests a mixture of reflection, uncertainty and perhaps a little wistfulness. He accepts that the choice has shaped his life, while also recognising that he will never know what might have happened if he had taken the other road.

II. Q.1. Have you ever had to make a difficult choice ( or do you think you will difficult choice to make)? How will you make the choice for what reasons?

Answer: Yes, difficult choices are a natural part of life. When I have to make an important choice, I would first consider all the available options carefully.

I would think about the advantages and disadvantages of each option, its possible consequences and how well it matches my goals and values. I would also seek advice from experienced people when necessary. Finally, I would make the decision thoughtfully and accept responsibility for it.

2. After you have made a choice do you always think about what might have been, or do you accept the reality?

Answer: It is natural to wonder sometimes what might have happened if we had made a different choice. However, continuously thinking about the past does not help us move forward.

Once I have made a thoughtful decision, I try to accept the reality and make the best of it. We can learn from past choices, but we should face the future with confidence and responsibility.

Answer:- The last two lines have the quintessence of the poem. The poet expresses his opinion that it becomes difficult for a normal human being to change his decision. The poet intends to walk on the first road but he couldn’t do so because life does not after multiple chances to choose. The decision taken may mar  one’s future or lead one to success. It makes all the differences. He now repents for not getting a chance to travel on the first road.

2. After you have made a choice do you always think about what might have been, or do you accept the reality? ( তুমি কিবা এটা সিদ্ধান্ত লোৱাৰ পাছত কি হ’ব ভাবি  চোৱানে? তুমি বাস্তৱক গ্ৰহণ কৰানে? )

Answer:- One should live in the present and not in the past. The philosophy of “is” is the key to attaining success. Life is not a bed of rases. Its hurdles are to be crossed bravely. One must not feel nervous  and get dejected in the trying aircume  tonces. On some instances, one needs to be confident about the choice he makes.
