Answer: Kezia was afraid of her father because he was strict, serious and commanding. His harsh voice and stern manner made her nervous whenever she had to speak to him.
(ii) Who were the people in Kezia family?
Answer: Kezia’s family consisted of her father, her mother, her grandmother and Kezia herself.
(iii) what was Kezia father’s routine?
(I) Before going in his office?
Answer: Before going to his office, Kezia’s father would come into her room and give her a goodbye kiss.

Answer: After returning from the office, he would ask for his tea, newspaper and slippers and relax in the drawing room.

Answer: On Sundays, Kezia’s father usually rested on the sofa in the drawing room. He covered his face with a handkerchief, put his feet on cushions and slept soundly.
(iv) In what ways did Kezia’s grandmother encourage. her to get to know her father better?
Answer: Kezia’s grandmother encouraged her to spend time with her father and talk to him. She also suggested that Kezia make a pin-cushion as a birthday gift for him so that she could develop a closer relationship with him.

1. Kezia’s efforts to please her father resulted in displeasing him very much. How this happen?
Answer: Kezia wanted to please her father and make him a birthday present. Following her grandmother’s suggestion, she decided to make a pin-cushion. She stitched a piece of cloth on three sides and looked for something to fill it with.
She found some sheets of paper and tore them into small pieces to stuff the cushion. She did not know that the papers contained her father’s important speech for the Port Authority.
When her father discovered what she had done, he became extremely angry and punished her. Thus, Kezia’s innocent attempt to make her father happy resulted in displeasing him greatly.
2. Kezia decides that there are “different kinds of fathers” . What kind of father was Mr. Macdonald, and how was he different from Kezia’s father?
Answer: Mr. Macdonald was a cheerful, loving and friendly father. Kezia saw him playing happily with his children. He carried one child on his shoulders, while the others laughed and played around him. His relationship with his children was warm and affectionate.
Kezia’s father, in contrast, appeared strict, serious and distant. He rarely played with her or spoke to her affectionately. His stern manner made Kezia afraid of him.
By observing Mr. Macdonald’s family, Kezia realised that fathers could behave differently with their children.
3. How does Kezia begin to see her father as a human being who needs her sympathy ?
Answer: One night, when Kezia’s mother and grandmother were away, Kezia had a frightening nightmare and woke up terrified. Her father came to her room, picked her up in his arms and carried her to his bed. He comforted her, covered her warmly and allowed her to sleep beside him.
As Kezia lay close to her father, she began to feel safe and understood that he was not as harsh as she had always believed. She realised that he worked hard all day and returned home tired, which was why he did not have much time to play with her.
This experience changed Kezia’s opinion of her father. She began to understand his difficulties and felt sympathy and affection for him.

1. Kezia’s efforts to please her father resulted in displeasing him very much. How this happen?

Answer: Kezia used to be afraid of her father because of his strict and rude nature. One day grandmother told her to make a pin – cushion to gift him on his birthday which was approaching. Kezia took it an opportunity to please him. So, she stitched cotton cloth three sides and looked for the things that could be stuffed into the stitched cloth. Soon she found out many sheets of paper, Actually they contained her father’s speech for the port Authority. She tore them into pieces and stuffed her case.
One day when her father looked for the papers, he did not find them. After some time, he came to know that Kezia had turn them into picas to make a pin cushion. He get infuriated and beat her with a ruler. Thus, her efforts to father resulted in displeasing him very much.

Macdonald family lived next door to her house. One evening she saw him playing tag with his children. A baby was on his shoulders and two little girls were hanging on to his coat pockets. They were laughing. Also she saw some boys turn the house on Macdonald and he tried to catch them laughing all the time. She found them feel friendly with father . So, she coursed if her father were like them.

He laid her on the bed pulled the covers up around her . A part from this he lay down beside her . After some time still half asleep . she crept close to he snuggled her head under his arm held tightly to his shift . Now she felt comfortable. Her father told her to rub her feet against his legs to get them warm . Now Kezia realized that her father was not as harsh as she thought . She realized that her father had to work all day long and got so tired that he could not play with her . She realized that her father wanted her to understand his compulsion.
