ESSAY TYPE QUESTIONS
1. What does the word “Majuli” mean? Write a few lines on the origin of Majuli.
Ans: The word “Majuli” is believed to have developed from the word “Majoli,” meaning a land situated between two rivers. Originally, Majuli was a long and narrow tract of land lying between the Brahmaputra in the north and the Burhidihing in the south.
It is difficult to determine the exact period when Majuli took its present form because there are not enough reliable historical records. However, geographical evidence and literary references suggest that the island had developed much before the thirteenth century.
Frequent earthquakes between 1661 and 1696 are believed to have weakened the region. Later, a severe flood around 1750 caused major changes in the channels of the Brahmaputra and Burhidihing. These changes gradually shaped Majuli into the river island known today.
Majuli is also made up of a number of smaller riverine landforms and has long been famous for its natural beauty, cultural heritage and Vaishnavite traditions.
