Jawaharlal Nehru

Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was born on 14 November 1889 in Allahabad. His father was Matilal Nehru and his mother was Swaroop Rani. Nehru was the eldest child and only son of his parents. He did not attend any school as a child. He was educated in English at home.

In 1905, at the age of sixteen, Nehru traveled to England with his parents and sister Vijayalaksi Pandit. There he attended Nehru School. Nehru was a favorite student of the teachers at school. He was attracted to politics from his student days. He was then a native of occupied India. While in school, he kept track of prominent freedom fighters and became active in a political awakening in India.

After completing his schooling, Nehru entered Trinity College. After three years in college, Nehru obtained second class honors in the Natural Science Troops. He graduated from Cambridge in 1910 and studied law in London for two years. In 1912, he passed his Barristership. After spending about eight years abroad, he returned to India as an educated young man of twenty-two or thirty-three years.

He returned to his homeland and joined the Allahabad court. He left the Barrister’s Office and joined the Servant of India Society founded by Gopal Krishna Gokhel.

In 1926, he married Kamala Nehru. In 1916, Nehru first met Gandhi at the Congress session in Lucknow. Mahatma Gandhi led the non-violent non-cooperation movement throughout India. Jawaharlal Nehru jumped into this movement. Within a short time of the outbreak of the Non-Cooperation Movement, 30,000 Congress leaders and activists were imprisoned, including Jawaharlal Nehru and his father Matilal Nehru. He was released from jail in Lucknow jail before the due date. In 1922, Nehru was arrested again while picketing a foreign clothing shop and sentenced to one year and nine months in prison.

In January 1923, Nehru was released from jail and appointed Secretary of the Indian Congress. Until now, he was the secretary of the Provincial Congress.

In 1929, Nehru was elected President of the Lahore Congress. It was at this session of the Congress that the resolution of full independence was passed.

In 1940, World War II began. In 1942, Nehru was imprisoned again. On 15 August 1947, India gained its long-awaited independence and Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru became the Prime Minister of independent India.

Nehru found self-satisfaction in devoting himself to the service of millions of Indians in India.

Two years and four months after India’s independence, a new regime was introduced. The people of India elected Nehru as Prime Minister.
