16 October World Food Day

World Food Day is celebrated every year on October 16. It was on this day in 1945 that the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations was formed. World Food Day has been celebrated every year since 1981 to coincide with the foundation day of this organization. In 1979, at the 20th Conference of the Food and Agriculture Organization held in the Italian capital Rome, a resolution was adopted to celebrate World Food Day, and on December 5, 1980, the United Nations General Assembly approved the proposal. The main objective of this day is to create awareness about the food problems arising all over the world and to express sympathy to the people who are struggling with starvation, poor and malnutrition. Every year specific topics are fixed for World Food Day. In 2011, the theme was ‘ From food price crisis to stability’. The World Bank’s 2010-11 report has revealed that rising prices of food items have pushed nearly 70 million people in the world into extreme poverty. Recently, there have been mass demonstrations in more than 20 countries around food.
