An enlarged spleen, medically known as splenomegaly, should not be treated at home. There are many underlying causes for an enlarged spleen, some benign and some serious. It is important to see a doctor to determine the cause and get proper treatment.

However, there are some lifestyle changes that can improve your overall health and potentially aid your spleen function:

  • Eat a healthy diet: Focus on whole, unprocessed foods, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Limit processed foods, sugary drinks, and unhealthy fats.
  • Maintain a healthy weight: Being overweight or obese can put stress on your spleen.
  • Exercise regularly: Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise most days of the week.
  • Manage stress: Stress can worsen inflammation throughout the body, including the spleen. There are many relaxation techniques that can help manage stress, such as yoga, meditation, and deep breathing.
  • Avoid injury to your abdomen: An enlarged spleen is more susceptible to rupture from a blow to the abdomen. Wear a seat belt in the car and avoid contact sports.

If you experience any of the following symptoms with an enlarged spleen, see a doctor right away:

  • Sudden and severe pain in your upper left abdomen
  • Fever
  • Easy bruising or bleeding
  • Feeling full after eating a small amount of food
  • Fatigue
