I. Write briefly the history of Kaziranga as a protected area.

Ans:  The history of Kaziranga as a protected area can be traced back to 1904.In 1904 Mary Curzon, wife of Lord Curzon , Viceroy of India visited Kaziranga. She had heard that Kaziranga was famous for rhinos. But she could not find a single rhino there. She requested her husband to take measures immediately to protect the rhinos. Soon after, in 1905, the Kaziranga Proposed Reserve Forest was created. Slowly, the park grew in size. In 1916, it was named Kaziranga Game Sanctuary. Visitors were allowed to enter the park. Hunting was strictly prohibited. Then in 1950 the name was again changed because ‘game’ also means animals hunted for sport and food which’s not appropriate for a park taco nerves animals. Then it was renamed as Kaziranga Wild Life Sanctuary in 1950 by P. D. Strachey, the forest conservationist of that time. It was in 1974 only that Kaziranga was designated a National Park.

2. Write a short note on Talatal Ghar. 

Ans: Talatal Ghar is situated at Sivasagar district. It was an ancient palace of Ahom and largest of all Ahom architecture of which only remains are left. The foundation of Talatal Ghar was laid by King Rudra Singha. It had four stories above ground and three stories under ground. There were two secret tunnels. One, which was 16 kilometers long, led to the Gurgaon Palace and the other, which was 3 kilometer’s long, led to the Dikkop river.

3. Write a note on Charaideo Maidam.

Ans: Maidam was a burial ground of the Ahom kings and nobles. Many royal graveyards still exist in this place. The hillock of Charaideo was considered to be sacred by the people of the Ahom dynasty. They believed this place to be the home of their ancestral gods. These have tomb vaults just like the pyramids in Egypt. Maidam’s are fascinating Ahom architecture.
